🪔 About
Arunima Kumar is a highly acclaimed Kuchipudi dancer, choreographer, and cultural leader, born in Delhi, India, on July 1, 1978. She began her dance training at the age of seven, initially under Padma Bhushan Smt. Swapna Sundari, and later became a senior disciple of Padmashree Guru JayaRama Rao and Vanashree Rao at the Kuchipudi Dance Academy. Her formal debut, or Rangapravesham, took place in 1995 at the Triveni Kala Sangam, New Delhi. Kumar moved to London in 2009, where she has been instrumental in promoting Kuchipudi, establishing it prominently within the United Kingdom's cultural landscape. She is the founder and artistic director of the Arunima Kumar Dance Company (AKDC), which has grown to become one of the largest Kuchipudi institutions outside India, with a presence in London and Delhi. Through AKDC, she has staged over 3,000 performances in more than 50 countries and conducted nearly 1,500 workshops, training hundreds of students across diverse age groups and backgrounds, including those in the UK, India, Poland, Brazil, and Italy. Beyond performances, Kumar is recognized for her significant social impact work. She founded Project Kanya and ARTH Foundation, which focus on women's development and supporting arts with a purpose. Her initiatives include providing free dance training and therapy sessions to underprivileged children, working with women inmates in prisons (notably Tihar Jail in India), and conducting dance therapy programs in hospitals, drug rehabilitation centers, and old age homes in London. Her work emphasizes dance as a tool for healing, empowerment, and inclusion, challenging traditional perceptions of classical dance as elitist.
