Shobha Naidu (1956 – October 14, 2020) was an acclaimed Indian classical dancer, choreographer, and guru renowned for her mastery of Kuchipudi, a traditional dance form from Andhra Pradesh. Born in Anakapalli, Andhra Pradesh, she displayed an innate sense of rhythm from an early age. She began her formal dance training at four under local guru P.L. Reddy in Rajahmundry. Despite initial familial reservations, her mother's support enabled her to pursue her passion. In 1968, at the age of 12, she became a disciple of the legendary Kuchipudi maestro Vempati Chinna Satyam in Chennai, where she trained intensively for 12 years. [1, 2, 5, 10] Naidu quickly gained recognition for her exceptional talent, mastering the intricate techniques of Kuchipudi. Her arangetram (debut performance) in Chennai marked the beginning of an illustrious career. She became particularly famous for her iconic portrayals of mythological characters such as Satyabhama in "Bhama Kalapam" and "Sri Krishna Parijatam," and also excelled in roles like Padmavati and Chandalika. [2, 4, 5, 8, 11] She dedicated her life to preserving and popularizing Kuchipudi, refusing lucrative offers from the film industry to maintain the classical purity of the art form. [8, 10] Throughout her career, Naidu choreographed over 80 solo pieces and 15 full-length ballets, often featuring empowered female figures. [2, 5, 10, 11] Her performances toured extensively across India and internationally, representing the country in the USA, UK, USSR, Syria, Turkey, Hong Kong, Mexico, Venezuela, Tunisia, and Cuba. [1, 2, 5, 11] In 1980, she founded the Srinivasa Kuchipudi Art Academy in Hyderabad, where she served as principal for four decades, training thousands of students from India and abroad and perpetuating the lineage of her guru, Vempati Chinna Satyam. [2, 5, 7, 10, 11] Shobha Naidu passed away in Hyderabad at the age of 64.
