The Shirley Hall Bass Foundation and Legacy Project present CHICKCHARNEY, A BAHAMIAN FOLKTALE reimagined through classical Indian dance of Odissi. The Chickcharney is a legendary creature from Andros Island folklore: a mischievous, owl-like being with red eyes, three toes, and the mystical power to bestow good fortune or misfortune depending on how it is treated. Bahamian Odissi artist Carlito Catalano embodies the creature through the ancient vocabulary of Odissi, fusing Caribbean folklore with South Asian movement traditions in a work that speaks to universal themes of acceptance, rejection, and the transformative power of kindness. Interpretation is by playwright Patrice Francis, whose storytelling draws out the moral heart of the Andros legend for the stage. Chicago-based choreographer Kevin Iega Jeff serves as Movement Consultant, with Founder and Executive Director Cristin Carole directing and producing. For the October 10 performance, the open-air amphitheatre of Fiona's Theatre will be transformed to evoke the mangrove forests of Andros Island, surrounding audiences in the ancient landscape from which the legend was born.
