Meaning
Jati is the class that fixes how many beats a laghu holds; Chatusra Jati gives it 4. Applied to the seven suladi talas it produces their four-count forms — for example Adi Tala (chatusra Triputa). The same five names are also used for the number of syllables in a beat (nadai) and in sollukattu phrases.
