Fan

English

The pleated front panel that opens out in aramandi

CostumeBharatanatyam

Meaning

The fan is the band of pleats at the front of the Bharatanatyam costume, stitched at the waist and falling between the legs. When the dancer sinks into aramandi or muzhumandi the pleats open out like a fan, so the stance reads clearly from the audience. It is used in both the pyjama and the saree style of costume.
