Meaning
Jati is the class that fixes how many beats a laghu holds; Khanda Jati gives it 5. Applied to the seven suladi talas it produces their five-count forms — for example Khanda Ata. The same five names are also used for the number of syllables in a beat (nadai) and in sollukattu phrases.
