Jagannath Prasad Mishra, popularly known as Achhan Maharaj, was a legendary figure in Indian classical dance, specifically Kathak, and a torchbearer of the Lucknow Gharana. Born in 1893 in Lamoha village, Sultanpur district, he was the eldest son of Kathak maestro Kalka Prasad. Achhan Maharaj received his initial training from his father and his paternal uncle, the eminent Bindadin Maharaj. Following the demise of his father and uncle, he took on the responsibility of training his younger brothers, Lachhu Maharaj and Shambhu Maharaj, who also became renowned Kathak exponents. Achhan Maharaj was celebrated as the "King of Kathak" and the "dance emperor of the 20th century" for his profound mastery over both Nritta (pure dance) and Bhava (expression). He was known for his ability to blend intricate rhythmic patterns with exceptional grace and storytelling, even with his heavy build. His unique approach incorporated subtle body movements and the expressive singing of thumris into his performances, allowing him to convey deep emotions that transcended words. His illustrious career saw him serve as a court dancer for Nawab Hamid Ali Khan of Rampur for approximately 18 years. He also performed and taught extensively in various princely states and cities across North India, including Raigarh, Calcutta, Bombay, and Baroda. Achhan Maharaj later taught at Delhi's School of Hindustani Music and Dance, now known as Sangeet Bharati. He composed numerous dances, primarily based on the playful acts of Lord Krishna. His teaching legacy is immense, having trained a multitude of disciples who went on to become significant Kathak dancers themselves, including his son, the iconic Birju Maharaj, and his brothers, Lachhu and Shambhu Maharaj. Other notable students included Damayanti Joshi, Sitara Devi, Kapila Vatsyayan, and Gopi Krishna. Achhan Maharaj passed away around 1947, leaving an indelible mark on the evolution of Kathak.
