Ajith Bhaskaran Dass is a renowned Malaysian Bharatanatyam dancer, choreographer, music composer, and Nattuvanar, celebrated for his contributions to Indian classical dance. Born in Malaysia, he embarked on his dance journey in the early 1970s, learning from the Bhaskars in his hometown of Johor Bahru. He later pursued formal training under an impressive lineage of gurus, including Smt. Bhanaumathi Krishnan, Smt. Shanta Ponnudurai, Ramli Ibrahim, Smt. Shantha Bhaskar, Adyar K. Lakshmanan, Guru Gajendar Kumar Panda, and Sri. Dhananjayan and Smt. Shantha Dhanajayan. Dass made the significant decision to leave a career in law to dedicate himself fully to his passion for Indian classical dance. In approximately 1993, at the age of 25, he established his own dance academy, Suvarna Fine Arts, in Malaysia. Under his artistic direction, Suvarna Fine Arts has gained recognition for producing distinct and original dance works that blend authentic classicism with universal appeal. Ajith Bhaskaran Dass is known for his mastery of techniques in both Bharatanatyam and Odissi. He has performed extensively both locally and internationally, gracing prestigious venues such as the Lincoln Center and the Joyce Theatre on Broadway, New York, becoming the first Malaysian to do so in 2003. He was also the first male Indian classical dancer to be featured in the 2000 International Arts Festival in Frankfurt, Germany. Beyond performing, Dass is a versatile artist who composes music for his productions and serves as a Nattuvanar, providing rhythmic accompaniment and reciting Solkattu for his dancers. He has also served as a judge for events like the Singapore Youth Festival, Indian Dance, and the programme Dhool V on Vasantham Channel. Awards & Honours: Best Male Dancer (1996).
