🪔 About
Aler Krishnan is an accomplished Bharatanatyam dancer, teacher, nattuvanar, and choreographer, widely recognized for her contributions to Indian classical dance in the United States. Born and raised in Madras (now Chennai), India, a city renowned for its classical arts, Krishnan was initiated into Bharatanatyam at the age of seven. Her early training was under the tutelage of esteemed Gurus Smt. Indra Rajan and Sri Pandanallur B. Srinivasa Pillai, who instilled in her a strong foundation and a commitment to perfection. She continues to refine her artistry under the mentorship of renowned Bharatanatyam exponents Smt. Bragha Bessell and Sri A. Lakshman. In 1994, Aler Krishnan established the Abinaya Arts Academy in San Diego, California, where she serves as the artistic director. Through her academy, she has trained hundreds of students, many of whom have gone on to become established and reputed dance teachers themselves, contributing to the preservation and promotion of Bharatanatyam for future generations. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes creating an inclusive and welcoming environment where students can connect with their cultural roots and grow as artists. Krishnan is also a co-founder of NavaDarshana, a dance initiative she established with world-renowned dancer Smt. Priyadarsini Govind. Her choreographic work is noted for its ability to tightly weave stories, integrating elements of yoga, melody, rhythm, and expressions. She has presented critically acclaimed solo and group productions such as "Shakthi," "Navarasa," and "Anaadi: The Eternal Flow," which premiered at the San Diego International Fringe Festival. Beyond her artistic pursuits, Aler Krishnan maintains a dual career as a technology manager and runs her own consulting firm, holding an MBA from the University of Texas at Austin and an M.Phil in Math and Operations Research from Anna University. She actively serves on the boards of several non-profit organizations, including the Indian Fine Arts Academy of San Diego, Acheve Foundation, and KG Foundation, where she provides artistic guidance and supports community outreach programs. Her ability to balance her professional and artistic passions, using skills from both to enhance her creative and leadership abilities, is a hallmark of her career.
