Anandi Ramachandran was a distinguished figure in the realm of Indian classical dance, specifically Bharatanatyam, and a prominent member of the Kalakshetra bani. Born in 1934, she was the daughter of the celebrated Tamil scholar, writer, and freedom fighter Kalki Krishnamurthy. Her upbringing in such a culturally rich environment undoubtedly shaped her artistic journey. She passed away in Chennai on March 16, 2005, at the age of 71, leaving behind a legacy as a Bharatanatyam teacher, musicologist, and Tamil writer. A pivotal moment in Anandi Ramachandran's dance career was her arangetram, or debut performance, which took place in 1945. This event was highly significant, not only for her but also for the broader Bharatanatyam community. The recital, shared with co-dancer Radha, was conducted by the revered Bharatanatyam maestro Guru Vazhuvoor Ramiah Pillai, a testament to her rigorous training and talent. Adding to the prestige of the occasion, the legendary Carnatic vocalist M.S. Subbulakshmi provided the vocal support, a rare privilege that underscored Anandi's standing in the artistic circles of her time. During this memorable performance, Anandi and Radha danced to Subramania Bharatiyar's patriotic song “Aduvome Palli Paduvome,” a choice that resonated deeply during that era. She also performed Kalki's composition of Malai Pozhuthinile, where she portrayed the nayika, while Radha enacted Lord Muruga, a novel approach at the time that highlighted the expressive potential of Bharatanatyam. Her daughter, Gowri Ramnarayan, has continued the family's artistic and intellectual tradition as an art critic and writer for The Hindu.
