Anjali Jayadev, professionally known as Anjali Jay, is a British actress, writer, and dancer of Indian descent, born on August 9, 1975, in Bangalore, India. Her upbringing was deeply influenced by the performing arts, particularly Indian classical dance, as she is the granddaughter of renowned Bharatanatyam gurus U.S. Krishna Rao and U.K. Chandrabhaga Devi. Anjali began her formal Bharatanatyam training at the tender age of seven under the tutelage of her esteemed grandparents in Bangalore, immersing herself in the rich Krishna Rao family tradition of Bharatanatyam. This early immersion provided her with a strong foundation in expressive movement, rhythm, and storytelling through mudras and abhinaya. After completing her Bachelor of Arts degree from Mount Carmel College in Bangalore in 1991, Jayadev pursued advanced education abroad. In 1996, she relocated to the United Kingdom on a prestigious Charles Wallace Scholarship to enroll in the Laban Centre for Movement and Dance in London. There, she earned a Master of Arts degree in Dance Theatre, which complemented her classical background by emphasizing innovative choreography and interdisciplinary performance techniques, including modern and contemporary dance styles. Following her graduation, she performed a season with the acclaimed Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company.
