🪔 About

Anjali Tata is a dance fusion artist recognized for her exploration of Contemporary Bharata Natyam. She earned an MFA in Dance from UCLA's Department of World Arts & Cultures and works as an arts educator in Dance and Yoga. Her extensive training includes 22 years of Bharata Natyam under her mentor Viji Prakash, complemented by over a decade of training in Yoga and Modern dance. Tata performed her Arangetram, or solo dance debut, in 1990. From 1992 to 1996, she toured across the U.S., Canada, and India as a principal dancer with Prakash's Shakti Dance Company. Subsequently, she began choreographing in both traditional and contemporary styles. Her new works have been presented at numerous venues throughout California, including Artwallah in 2001, 2003, and 2004, the World Festival of Sacred Music, Highways Performance Space, and the Hollywood Bowl. Tata has also collaborated with and performed in works by prominent artists such as Lynn Dally, Parijat Desai, Paula Present, Nitin Sawhney, and David Rousseve. Between 2005 and 2013, she was a co-founding member of the Post Natyam Dance Collective, a transnational network dedicated to engaging with South Asian aesthetics. In 2004, Tata relocated from California to Kansas City, Kansas, where she continues to teach dance and yoga independently and at the college level. In 2008 and 2009, she toured nationally with David Rousseve/REALITY in his dance theatre production "Saudade," performing at prestigious venues like Jacob's Pillow. In June 2011, she performed with the Post Natyam Collective at the National Asian American Theater Festival.
