Anupa G. Thakurta is a respected Bharatanatyam dancer, choreographer, and teacher, recognized in dance circles across the US, UK, and India. She was introduced to Bharatanatyam at the age of six, initially studying under Shrimati Thankamuni Kutti of Kalamandalam, Kolkata, India. Her talent was further honed under the tutelage of Padmashri Guru Saroja Vaidyanathan of Ganesa Natyalaya in New Delhi, India. Anupa completed her Arangetram in 1996. Following her debut, she continued her artistic development through mentorship and study with renowned Bharatanatyam exponent and Sangeet Natak Academy Awardee, Kalaimamani Rama Vaidyanathan. Beyond her dance training, Anupa G. Thakurta holds a Bachelor of Arts with Honors in English from the University of Delhi, graduating in 1998, where she was also awarded "All Round Best Student of the Year." She pursued a post-graduate course in Mass Communications at YMCA, New Delhi. Her comprehensive understanding of dance is further evidenced by her successful completion of various arts and dance-related courses from institutions like the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Mandal in Bombay and Prayag Sangeet Samiti in Allahabad. She also delved into the theoretical aspects of Bharatanatyam, studying the ancient text "Natya Shastra." As a performer, Anupa has presented recitals, kutcheris, and lecture demonstrations of Bharatanatyam in India and numerous other countries. She is also a prolific choreographer, with many group and solo productions to her credit. Known for her ability to present both traditional Bharatanatyam margams and innovative, modern themes, she actively explores the juxtaposition and fusion of different dance forms. Anupa is based in Atlanta, USA, where she continues to perform regularly and serves as a faculty member in the department of dance at Kennesaw State University. Anupa G. Thakurta is the founder and head of the Deeksha School of Performing Arts in Atlanta, where she has been imparting Bharatanatyam training to over 175 disciples in India and abroad since the early 1990s.
