Anuradha Ramkumar was a distinguished figure in Indian classical dance, widely recognized as a veteran teacher and cultural ambassador in New Zealand. She established Nrityabhinaya-Anuradha's School of Indian Dances in Auckland in 1996, playing a pivotal role in the growth and preservation of Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi in the region for over two-and-a-half decades. Through her academy, she provided crucial opportunities for future generations of New Zealand Indians to maintain connections to their cultural heritage through dance. Ramkumar was a dedicated guru, having trained thousands of men and women from diverse backgrounds, including members of the Māori community, and guided hundreds of students through their Arangetrams (graduation ceremonies) annually. By 2023, she had taught over 500 students across 26 years. Her artistic contributions extended to directing captivating dance productions that explored Indian mythologies and social themes, such as "Ramayan," "Suryaputra Karna," "Maha Yugas," and "Krishna Leela." Notably, the production "Maha Yugas - Four Epochs of Time" celebrated the 25th anniversary of her school in 2021, featuring over 100 students from various ethnic groups. Ramkumar also ingeniously incorporated elements of Māori culture into her productions, recognizing and honoring the connections between Indian and Māori traditions. In recognition of her profound services to Indian classical dance, Anuradha Ramkumar was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) in the 2024 New Year Honours, with the investiture taking place on May 8, 2024. She also received the Kiwi Indian Cultural Excellence Award at the Hall Of Fame 2023 Awards. Beyond her dance career, she was an academician and worked as a full-time intermediate school teacher for over two decades. Anuradha Ramkumar passed away peacefully on May 17, 2026, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, at the age of 62, leaving behind a significant legacy in the cultural landscape of New Zealand.
