Araiyar Balamukundachariyar is a hereditary performer of Araiyar Sevai, an ancient Tamil Hindu performing art form centered on the ritual singing and enactment of the hymns of the Divya Prabandham within Vaishnavite temples. He is the son of the late Araiyar Srinivasa Rengachariar (also known as Araiyar Srinivasa Ranga Chariyar Swami), who was a leading exponent of Araiyar Sevai at the temple of Andal at Srivilliputhur and was posthumously conferred the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2014 for his services to the art form. Araiyar Balamukundachariyar continues this sacred family tradition, performing the Araiyar Sevai, which is generally performed only inside Vaishnavite temples by hereditary male performers called Araiyars. As of December 2022, he was around 70 years old and actively performing the service. His son, Araiyar Srinivasa Rengan (also known as Araiyar Natha Muni), has also embraced the tradition, having left a corporate career to dedicate himself to the Araiyar Sevai Kainkaryam at the Srivilliputhur Vadabadrasayee Divya Desam, assisting his father. The art form, which traces its origins to the 10th-century Vaishnavite teacher Nathamuni, involves years of study of the Divya Prabandham hymns and traditional commentaries.
