🪔 About
Armelle Choquard, a prominent French figure in Bharatanatyam, embarked on her journey with Indian classical dance in 1979. Her profound dedication led her to India, where she received a traditional education in Madras from 1982 to 1986, supported by an ICCR scholarship from the Indian government. During this period, she trained under esteemed masters such as Muthuswamy Pillai and Kalanidhi Narayanan, the latter specializing in abhinaya (narrative dance). Concurrently, Choquard pursued a double master's degree in Indian philosophy and aesthetics at the Sorbonne and delved into Sanskrit, studying and translating foundational texts like the Nâtya Shâstra and Dvanyâloka. Upon her return to France in 1986, Choquard established herself as a leading exponent and pedagogue of Bharatanatyam. She maintains strong ties with India, frequently returning to enrich her repertoire and collaborate with artists like dancer Sucheta Chapekar in Pune, with whom she also records music for her creations. Choquard is celebrated for her unique choreographic language and creative approach, often collaborating with contemporary and traditional musicians, including performances with Ubris Studio, composer Annabelle Playe, and the company Le Miroir du Geste. Her recent works have been inspired by the music of Jan Mari Carlotti, blending Sanskrit poetry, Occitan music, and troubadour chants, performed across France, Belgium, Italy, and India. With over thirty years of teaching experience, Armelle Choquard has nurtured numerous students, many of whom have become recognized dancers. She conducts weekly classes in Aix, Arles, and Fuveau, along with monthly workshops and summer intensives. To further support emerging talent, she founded the "Compagnie des Nataka" with her advanced students, providing a platform for young professionals. Her contributions have been lauded by the press, describing her as a "goddess of Bharata Natyam" who combines expressive force with grace, precision, and a deep understanding of Indian philosophy.
