🪔 About

Arul Ramiah is a Singaporean Bharatanatyam dancer and choreographer, recognized for her contributions to Indian classical dance. She began her Bharatanatyam training at the age of four. Ramiah pursued advanced studies in Bharatanatyam under the renowned teacher K.J. Sarasa in Chennai, India, refreshing her foundational skills and delving into more complex aspects of the dance form. She is known for her innovative approach to Bharatanatyam, seeking to reinterpret the ancient art form to suit a modern context. In April 2002, Ramiah created and presented "Abhinaya — My Journey of Return," a multi-media Bharatanatyam presentation at the Asian Civilisations Museum in Singapore. This production, described as a "first of its kind in Singapore," involved collaborations with documentary maker Tan Siok Siok and fine arts photographer Ken Seet. Her choreography is rooted in the Bharatanatyam school of dance. Beyond her dance career, Arul Ramiah is also a corporate lawyer, having held positions such as Chief Legal Officer at FINXFLO and serving as a former International Monetary Fund (IMF) attorney. She has also performed at international venues such as The Bali Purnati Center For The Arts, where she explored cross-cultural experiments by integrating Balinese dance elements with Bharatanatyam.
