A.B. Bala Kondala Rao, affectionately known as Balakka, is a legendary Kuchipudi dancer and one of its greatest exponents. Born on July 4, 1956, in Rajavolu, Andhra Pradesh, she began her dance journey at the age of nine, demonstrating an early passion for the art form. Her father, recognizing her talent, introduced her to Kuchipudi, and she subsequently became a prime disciple of the renowned Guru Sri Vempati Chinna Satyam at the Kuchipudi Art Academy in Chennai. Her dedication was such that she moved from Rajahmundry to Chennai to live with her guru and hone her skills. Bala Kondala Rao quickly distinguished herself, becoming an assistant teacher to Guru Vempati Chinna Satyam at the tender age of 13. She later served as the principal of Kuchipudi Kalakshetram in Visakhapatnam for 12 years. Throughout her career, she has toured the world, delivering classic performances and breathing life into numerous roles in Guru Satyam's ballets, including Parvathi, Rukmini, and Prakrithi. In 1997, Bala Kondala Rao established her own institution, the Kuchipudi Kalaa Kendram, in Visakhapatnam, where she continues to impart her knowledge and passion for Kuchipudi. She is also recognized for her strong Nattuvangam skills and has choreographed several ballets. Her contributions extend to promoting Kuchipudi internationally through workshops and performances in countries like the USA, Germany, France, the UK, and Russia. She has also authored a book on the Adavus of Kuchipudi. Bala Kondala Rao is celebrated for preserving the traditional aspects of Kuchipudi while also introducing innovative performances.
