Guru B. Bhanumathi is a highly respected figure in Indian classical dance, renowned for her contributions as a Bharatanatyam performer, teacher, guru, choreographer, and institution head. She began her dance training at the age of 10, receiving tutelage from legendary gurus including Padmashri K.N. Dandayuthapani Pillai, Padmabhushan Dr. K. Venkatalakshamma, the doyen of the Mysore tradition, and Padmabhushan Smt. Kalanidhi Narayanan. Bhanumathi is the director of Nritya Kalamandiram, a prominent institution for Bharatanatyam. She has been actively training students in Bharatanatyam for over 25 years, emphasizing the spiritual essence of dance in her teaching. Her commitment to nurturing students with patience, love, precision, and humility is widely recognized. In 1994, Guru B. Bhanumathi founded the dance troupe "Bharatanjali," which has since presented over 500 shows globally, featuring her original choreographies of both ancient and contemporary compositions. Bharatanjali received the "Best Bharatanatyam Dance Troupe" award from the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR). Bhanumathi is particularly noted for her pioneering excellence in group choreography, for which she received a senior fellowship from the Ministry of Human Resource Development. Her work in choreography is celebrated for breaking new ground in classical content, aesthetic appeal, and overall impact. She has also contributed to the textbook committee on dance in Karnataka and played a role in documenting the legacy of K.N. Dandayuthapani Pillai. Guru B. Bhanumathi has conducted numerous lecture-demonstrations and workshops on Bharatanatyam in India, the USA, the UK, Malaysia, and Singapore.
