Beate Gatscha

Beate Gatscha is a freelance artist based in Berlin, Germany, active as a musician, dancer, and painter. Her artistic work emphasizes music theater, light-graphic dance theater, mask and expressive dance, percussion, vocals, and collaborations with artists from diverse cultures. She pursued studies in painting/art education at HdK Berlin and music ethnology at HU Berlin. Since 1998, she has trained in classical Indian Kathak dance under the guidance of Ioanna Srinivasan, Pandit Vijay Shankar, Harish S. Gangani, and Amala Patkar. In 2012, her artistic focus shifted towards the classical Indian Dhrupad style. She initially received lessons in Dhrupad vocals and Pakhawaj from Amelia Cuni in Berlin. Since 2018, she has continued her Dhrupad vocal training with Dr. Sumeet Anand in Delhi, and since 2020, her Pakhawaj training with master drummer Pandit Radheshyam Sharma in Delhi. Gatscha also plays a variety of other percussion instruments, including Hang (Handpan), Aquarion (Glass-Marimba), Pakhawaj, Kanjira, Daf, Gongs, Windspiel, Sansula, and Tanpura. She studied Japanese Taiko Drumming from 2007, leading the ensemble RASA DAIKO from 2009 to 2017, and also studied Balinese Gender Wayang from 2015 to 2018. She has undertaken study visits and performed internationally in countries such as India, Japan, Bali, Switzerland, and the USA. Between 2019 and 2025, she curated and organized the world music salon "Der fliegende Teppich" in Berlin to promote intercultural projects.
