Swamimalai K. Rajarathnam Pillai (1931-1994) was a highly revered figure in Indian classical dance, particularly Bharatanatyam, and a doyen among natyacharyas. He was known for his profound musical talent, intricate jathis, elegant nattuvangam, and innovative choreography skills. A proponent of the Vazhuvoor style of Bharatanatyam, he trained under his grandfather, Padmashree Vazhuvur Ramiah Pillai. Rajarathnam Pillai established his own dance school, Kamala Kala Nilayam, in 1970, which was later renamed Rajarathnalaya Bharatha Kalai Koodam by his grandfather. He was an acclaimed teacher, known for his patience and commitment to all students, customizing his choreography to suit their individual physique and artistic potential. Beyond teaching, he performed nattuvangam and sang for prominent dancers such as Kanaka Srinivasan, Vyjayanthimala, Komala Varadhan, and Kamala Radha. His choreographic masterpiece, "Bharathathil Bharathi," featured compositions solely by Mahakavi Subramania Bharati. Rajarathnam Pillai was a hereditary practitioner from the Isaivellalar community, representing the traditional nattuvanar lineage. He passed away in 1994, shortly after his birthday on July 3rd, which he celebrated in Houston, Texas, during a US tour, before returning to Chennai. His legacy is carried forward by his numerous illustrious students and his daughter, Jayakamala Pandiyan, and granddaughter, Nrithya Pillai, who continue to be involved in Bharatanatyam.
