Born on September 13, 1956, in New Delhi, Bharat Sharma is a prominent Indian classical dance figure, choreographer, teacher, and arts administrator. He received his initial grooming in the principles of choreography from his father, Narendra Sharma, at the Bhoomika Creative Dance Centre in New Delhi. His extensive training also includes Mayurbhanj Chhau under Krishna Chandra Naik and Kathakali under Sadanam Balakrishnan. Further expanding his expertise, Sharma studied modern dance, ballet, and jazz techniques in New York at the Nikolais Louis Dance Lab and Ruth Currier Studio, and also attended the Jacob's Pillow and North Carolina American Dance Festivals. As a performer, Bharat Sharma has graced stages both in India and internationally, participating in major festivals as a soloist with Bhoomika and independently, including the American Dance Festival in the USA, La Danse a Aix in France, and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Festival in India. His choreographic works for Bhoomika include notable productions such as 'Pathik' (1988), 'Swapnakosh' (1990), 'Nightingale' (2008), and 'Metro! Metro!' (2010). He has also choreographed large group dances for events like the Republic Day Parade in New Delhi (1985 and 1991) and was co-choreographer for the closing event of the Festival of India in Moscow (1988). Sharma has contributed significantly to arts education and administration. He served as a Reader (Associate Professor) at the University of Hyderabad, teaching choreography and modern dance techniques. He was also instrumental in establishing the India Foundation for the Arts, where he initiated and steered the arts collaboration program. Currently, he serves as the Director of Bhoomika Creative Dance Centre in New Delhi and, in 2022, became the Artistic Director of Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra.
