Born on January 1, 1962, in Purulia, West Bengal, India, Bhuban Kumar is a veteran and renowned Chhau dancer, particularly celebrated for his mastery of the Purulia Chhau style. His journey into the vibrant world of Chhau dance began at the tender age of twelve, inspired by his father, the late Prabhudas Kumar, who was himself a distinguished Chhau artist in the region. Bhuban Kumar received his training in Natraj Nritya (Chhau), a foundational aspect of his artistic development. In 1985, Bhuban Kumar established his own Chhau team, marking a significant step in his career. Under his leadership, this troupe has created and performed numerous popular productions, including notable works such as Santhal Bidroho, Sidhu Kanu, Nabab Murshid Kuli Khan, and Kargil Juddha. His performances have captivated audiences not only across Bengal and Jharkhand but also in various other parts of India, contributing significantly to the popularization of Purulia Chhau. Bhuban Kumar leads the "Bamnia Surya Tarun Chhau Nritya Samiti" (Bamnia Surya Tarun Chhau Dance Association), an institution that has achieved first place in numerous dance presentations. His dedication and profound contributions to the art form have earned him several accolades. Most notably, he was honored with the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2021 for his exceptional work in Purulia Chhau dance. This award was presented by President Droupadi Murmu in February 2023. Additionally, he has received recognition at events such as the Somnath Rastriya Lok Rang Mohotsav in Patna in 2020, the Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan in Jabalpur in 2006, and the Chhau Utsav in Purulia. Continuing his legacy, his two sons are also actively involved in Chhau dance.
