🪔 About

Bipasha Guptaroy is a distinguished Indian classical and contemporary dancer, choreographer, and educator, known for her extensive training and performances across various dance forms. She received her initial dance training at the Uday Shankar India Culture Center under the tutelage of Smt. Amala Shankar, wife of the legendary Uday Shankar. There, she was trained in Uday Shankar's creative dance style, as well as Bharatanatyam, Kathakali, and Manipuri, earning a diploma in dance from the center. Guptaroy furthered her Bharatanatyam studies with renowned exponent Leela Samson at Bhartiya Kala Kendra in New Delhi. She also trained in Bharatanatyam and Odissi with Neena Gulati in Boston. Throughout her career, Bipasha Guptaroy has performed extensively in Odissi and contemporary styles both within and outside the USA. She founded the Srijan Dance Company, with which she has choreographed and performed extensively in Shankar's style. Her work includes an artistic homage to Uday Shankar, which was featured in a Contemporary Showcase at the Jhankaar Festival around the year 2000, coinciding with Shankar's centenary. She was also a collaborator in a dance residency focused on Shankar's style, funded by the Center for World Performance at the University of Michigan. Guptaroy has served as a guest lecturer of world dance at the University of Michigan and has performed the Uday Shankar dance style globally. In September 2020, she participated in a presentation titled "Va Vibita on creative Indian dance" by the Nandanik Dance Troupe, offering a tribute to her guru Srimati Amala Shankar and discussing her training and practice in Uday Shankar's creative dance style. Beyond her artistic pursuits, Bipasha Guptaroy holds a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology and works as a research scientist in Pharmacology at the University of Michigan Medical School.
