Bragha Bessell is a highly acclaimed Bharatanatyam dancer, teacher, and abhinaya specialist, widely regarded as one of the finest exponents of her generation. Her journey in Bharatanatyam began under the tutelage of Guru Late Sri Mangudi Durairaj Iyer, with her arangetram taking place in either 1966 or 1967. She further honed her skills for nearly 15 years with Guru Sri P. S. Kunchithapadam Pillai. For advanced training, she became a disciple of Padma Shri Adyar K. Lakshman, focusing on nritta, and Padma Bhushan Smt. Kalanidhi Narayanan, specializing in abhinaya. She also received training in nattuvangam from Guru Kamalarani. With a career spanning over five decades, Bessell has performed extensively in India and internationally, earning widespread acclaim for her dance performances. She is particularly celebrated for her profound depth in abhinaya (expressive storytelling) and her command of nritta (pure dance), bringing rare sensitivity and nuance to the art form. Bragha Bessell is an empaneled artist of Doordarshan and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR). Since 2005, she has been a visiting faculty member at the esteemed Kalakshetra Foundation, teaching abhinaya classes for advanced students. She regularly conducts workshops and lecture-demonstrations across Asia, America, and Europe, and her original choreography is highly appreciated by students, teachers, and professional dancers. Her dedication has played a pivotal role in preserving and propagating Bharatanatyam globally, with her abhinaya techniques influencing professionals from other classical dance forms like Mohiniyattam, Odissi, and Kathak.
