Buse Gowda, also known by the title 'Mayura', is a distinguished Indian classical Bharatanatyam dancer renowned for his mastery of the art form despite being visually impaired since the age of three due to an accident. His journey in dance began at the age of eight at the Ramana Maharishi Academy for the Blind, where he met dance teacher Ashok Kumar, who was establishing his school, 'Natyanjali'. Buse Gowda's inquisitive nature led him to learn Bharatanatyam through a unique "touch and feel" technique developed and later patented by Ashok Kumar in 2000. This method allowed Buse Gowda to feel his guru's movements and postures, enabling him to master the intricate footwork and hand gestures within two years, a feat that typically takes a sighted person a year. Buse Gowda's arangetram (debut performance) took place in 1995. He is particularly acclaimed for his exceptional facial expressions (abhinaya), a crucial aspect of Bharatanatyam. He has performed over a thousand times and is known for delivering elaborate classical solo performances, such as the 'Dasavathara', for over two hours without assistance. He is also an auditioned artiste of Bangalore Doordarshan, India's national television network. Buse Gowda aspires to establish dance schools specifically for the visually challenged, aiming to make classical dance accessible to more students with visual impairments.
