Chandramana Govindan Namboothiri (born February 15, 1935) was a distinguished Kathakali artist hailing from Chandramana Illam, Asamannoor, in the South Indian state of Kerala. Born to C.S. Govindan Namboodiri and Devaki Antharjanam, he completed his primary education up to the 7th standard before dedicating himself to the art form. His formal Kathakali training commenced in 1947 under the tutelage of Kavunkal Chathunni Panikkar. After three years of foundational study in Kerala, Namboothiri moved to the Darpana Academy of Performing Arts in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, where he continued his advanced training alongside Panikkar. He also received guidance from other eminent Kathakali masters such as Kalamandalam Krishnan Nair and Mankulam Vishnu Namboothiri. Namboothiri's career spanned several decades, during which he performed extensively in temples, Kathakali clubs, and academies. He was particularly renowned for his mastery in portraying Pacha (green-faced noble heroes), Kathi (anti-heroic warriors), and Minukku (subtle sage-like or female characters). His notable roles included Karnan in 'Karnasapadham', Naaradan, and Sudevan. Beyond performance, he contributed to the scholarly understanding of Kathakali, receiving a Senior Fellowship from the Department of Culture, Government of India, in 1997–1998 for his research on 'Ilakiyattam', the improvisational acting segments central to Kathakali narratives. He was also a mentor to aspiring Kathakali artists, passing on his knowledge of character portrayals and stage techniques. He was married and had four sons.
