🪔 About
Chandrika Chandran is a distinguished Bharatanatyam exponent and a dedicated educator based in Johns Creek, Georgia, USA. She established the Natyanjali Academy of Dance in 1997, an institution devoted to the preservation and dissemination of the ancient Indian classical dance form of Bharatanatyam. Her extensive training in Bharatanatyam was under the tutelage of revered gurus, including Padmashri Sri. Vazhuvoor Ramiah Pillai and Kalaimamani Sri. S.K. Rajarathinam, followed by further instruction from Smt. Revathi Ramachandran. Chandran's teaching methodology is rooted in the traditional Vazhuvoor and Melattur styles, ensuring a strong foundation in the classical form. With over two decades of teaching experience in the Atlanta metropolitan area, Chandrika Chandran has significantly contributed to the local Indian classical dance community. She has guided numerous students through their Bharatanatyam journey, with many successfully completing their Arangetrams, marking their solo debut performances. These students are frequently invited to perform at various community events and fundraisers, showcasing their talent and the rich cultural heritage of Bharatanatyam. Chandran's commitment extends to artistic direction and production, exemplified by her 2010 dance production "Mohana Krishna." This acclaimed show, performed at the Ferst Center for the Arts, served as a fundraiser for the Atlanta Chapter of Asha for Education, supporting educational initiatives for underprivileged children in India. The production was well-received by the community, highlighting her understanding of the art form and her ability to interpret ritualistic texts for contemporary audiences. Her daughter, Nisha Chandran, is also an accomplished Bharatanatyam performer, often collaborating with her mother in performances. Through the Natyanjali Academy of Dance, Chandrika Chandran continues to impart her knowledge and passion for Bharatanatyam, providing individualized attention and ample performance opportunities to her disciples.
