Charu Sija Mathur, born in Delhi in 1940, is a distinguished exponent and guru of Manipuri dance. Her foundational training in Manipuri dance began under the tutelage of the eminent Guru R.K. Singhajit Singh at the Triveni Kala Sangam in Delhi. Their artistic collaboration deepened, leading to their marriage in 1975. Mathur has dedicated several decades to the promotion and propagation of Manipuri dance, establishing herself as a versatile artist equally proficient in both dance-dramas and solo performances. Her presentations are widely acclaimed for their elegance, maturity, and profound sensitivity. Throughout her illustrious career, Charu Sija Mathur has been an integral part of her husband's choreographic endeavors, performing lead roles in approximately thirty-five dance-dramas, including notable productions such as Shakuntala, Savitri, Sita, and Ingel-Lei. She has performed widely in India and abroad, participating in numerous prestigious dance festivals. Beyond her performing career, Mathur is also committed to nurturing the next generation of Manipuri dancers, actively teaching advanced students. As a director and choreographer in her own right, she is an active member of the troupe and accompanies them worldwide. Together with R.K. Singhajit Singh, she co-founded Manipuri Nrityashram in New Delhi, an institution dedicated to the preservation and dissemination of the Manipuri classical dance form. The academy, located at 54 Bharati Artist Colony, Vikas Marg, Delhi, serves as a hub for Manipuri dance education and performance. Her significant contributions to Indian classical dance have been recognized with esteemed accolades, including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2001 for Manipuri Dance and the Sahitya Kala Parishad Samman of Delhi.
