Chinnamanur Dr A.Chitra stands as a prominent figure in the realm of Indian classical dance, particularly Bharatanatyam. Her multifaceted career encompasses roles as an accomplished performer, dedicated teacher, and insightful researcher. She currently serves as an Assistant Professor (Nattuvangam) in the esteemed Music Department at Annamalai University, a position she has held since March 11, 2004. Dr. Chitra's academic credentials are robust, including a T.T.C., a background as a Traditional Musician, a B.A. in Sociology, and a Ph.D., underscoring her comprehensive understanding of both the practical and theoretical aspects of her art. Her artistic merit is further acknowledged by her status as a Bharathanatyam Grade Artist in Doordarshan Kendra, India's public service broadcaster, highlighting her recognized performing capabilities. With an extensive background spanning approximately 22 years in teaching and research, Dr. Chitra has made significant contributions to the propagation and evolution of Indian classical dance. Her profound dedication and excellence in the art form have been recognized with the prestigious "Kalaimamani" title, a high civilian award bestowed by the Government of Tamil Nadu to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the arts. As a performer, she has graced numerous stages, presenting intricate traditional collections of jathi and captivating Bharatanatyam performances, notably at events such as the Indian Dance Festival in 2023. Beyond her vibrant performances and pedagogical responsibilities, Dr. Chitra is deeply engaged in academic scholarship. Her research interests are broad, encompassing the intricate connections between dance, music, and media in the 20th and 21st centuries. She has a commendable record of publications, including articles in both national and international journals, and has actively participated in and conducted numerous conferences, seminars, and workshops.
