Chirakkara Madhavankutty, born on June 13, 1939, in Chirakkara, Kollam, Kerala, was a distinguished Indian Kathakali artist renowned for his exceptional portrayal of female characters. He was the third child of Raman Pillai and Chellamma. His passion for Kathakali ignited at the age of 11, leading him to begin training under Chirakkara Nanu Ashan. Madhavankutty made his debut at the same age, portraying Lord Krishna in the play "Rukminiswayamvaram." He further honed his skills under the guidance of Kathakali artist Mankulam Vishnu Namboothiri in Kayamkulam, who was also acclaimed for feminine roles. Madhavankutty became famous for embodying various female characters such as Kunthi, Sairandhri, Draupadi, Chandramathi, Urvashi, Malayathi, and Mohini, which became his signature roles. His debut in a feminine role was as Panchali in 1952. A notable performance occurred in 1955 when he portrayed Mohini for Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in Delhi, earning him a gold medal. In 1965, Madhavankutty made a cinematic appearance in the Malayalam movie "Mayavi," depicting Sairandhri. He dedicated 16 years to training aspiring Kathakali performers at the Mankulam Kalari. In his later years, he was a highly sought-after performer, sharing stages with renowned artists like Kalamandalam Gopi and maintaining a rigorous schedule of approximately 250 performances annually. His contributions to Kathakali were recognized with the Mali Karnasapatham Award in 2009. His final performance was on Vijayadashami day in 2010, where he portrayed 'Sundarabrahmanan'. Chirakkara Madhavankutty mysteriously disappeared in January 2011 at the age of 72, and his whereabouts remain unknown. He chose not to marry during his lifetime.
