Chitra Venugopal, born on July 28, 1936, was a distinguished Indian classical Kathak dancer, choreographer, and teacher, and the younger sister of renowned Kathak guru Maya Rao. Hailing from a family of artistes, she began her dance training at the tender age of four. Her initial training was under Guru Sohanlal of the Jaipur Gharana, and later she continued her studies with her sister, Guru Maya Rao, at Natya Saraswati in Bangalore. After completing her BA in Home Science in 1957, Venugopal was awarded the prestigious Government of India Scholarship for Kathak studies at Bharatiya Kala Kendra (now Kathak Kendra) in Delhi, becoming the second South Indian to receive this honor. During this period, she received intensive training from legendary gurus including Shambu Maharaj, Birju Maharaj, Devendra Shanker, and Maya Rao. She also gained exposure to musical composition for dance from the Dagar Brothers. Throughout her career, Chitra Venugopal performed lead roles in productions by Bharatiya Kala Kendra and the Natya Institute of Kathak and Choreography (NIKC), traveling extensively across India. She dedicated herself to propagating Kathak in regions where it was less known, teaching at institutions such as Kendriya Vidyalaya in Coimbatore until 1975 and later at Adarsh Vidyalaya, Chennai. A prolific choreographer, she created numerous ballets, including notable works like 'Abhigyana Shakuntala' (involving over a hundred participants), 'Chandalika', 'Rani Jhansi', and 'Govardhan Leela', many of which were presented by Madras Doordarshan. Her ballet 'Vision of Surdas' was also well-received when presented by AIR at the Music Academy in Madras. From 1979 to 1988, Venugopal lived in the United Kingdom and Egypt, where she continued to promote Kathak by conducting workshops at the Commonwealth Institute and performing at various British associations and Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. Upon her return to India, she became a significant figure in Kathak education in Bangalore. She was appointed Chairman of the Text Book Committee for the first Kathak Junior exams textbook in 1994 and served as a member of the Audition Committee for Dance for Doordarshan Kendra, Bangalore, from 1999 to 2001. In 2000, she joined Kala Bharati, the cultural wing of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Bangalore Kendra, as the Head of the Kathak training section, where she provided rigorous training to over forty students. In recognition of her contributions, she received the Kala Shri award for 1996-1997 from the Karnataka Sangeetha Nritya Akademi and a Senior Fellowship Award for research in 'Abhinaya in Kathak' from the Ministry of HRD, Central Government, for the years 2000-2002. Chitra Venugopal passed away in 2025, leaving behind an indelible legacy in the world of Indian classical dance.
