Christopher Gurusamy is a leading Bharatanatyam soloist, widely recognized as a trailblazer of his generation. Born and raised in Perth, Western Australia, his profound passion for dance led him to India at the age of 18 in 2005. He embarked on a rigorous six-year training program at the internationally renowned Kalakshetra conservatorium in Chennai, becoming the first Australian to graduate from the institution with a First Class postgraduate diploma in 2011. His studies at Kalakshetra occurred during the directorship of eminent dancer Leela Samson. Following his graduation, Gurusamy continued his professional journey in India, performing, touring, and working as a principal dancer with Leela Samson's acclaimed Spanda Dance Company from 2012 to 2017. For over a decade, he has also dedicated himself to advanced training in abhinaya (emotive dance) under the tutelage of eminent guru Bragha Bessell. A highly popular soloist, Gurusamy performs annually in Chennai's prestigious December Season at major festivals, including the Madras Music Academy, Sri Krishna Gana Sabha, and Narada Gana Sabha. He also tours extensively as a soloist internationally, with performances in the USA, UK, and Singapore. His work has garnered widespread critical acclaim, notably being named in 'Best Dance of 2017' by New York Times critic Alastair Macaulay. In 2022, after 18 years based in India, Christopher Gurusamy returned to Australia and is now based between Sydney and Chennai. He continues to develop his practice, exploring the intersectionality of his identity as a mixed-race, queer man, and creating works that bridge Indian and Australian arts worlds. His recent productions, such as "Ānanda: Dance of Joy" (2024) and "5 Arrows" (2025), have received critical acclaim and sold-out seasons.
