Vidwan D. Keshava is an acclaimed Indian artiste and a pivotal figure in establishing Indian classical dance, particularly the Mysore style of Bharatanatyam, in the Western world. Born and raised in Mysore, South India, Keshava's artistic journey began with intensive studies in dance, music, and acting at Mysore University from 1969 to 1975. During this period, he achieved the distinction of being the first male dancer in Karnataka to be awarded the title of "Natyavisharada" along with a gold medal. His Bharatanatyam training was deeply rooted in the Mysore tradition, under the tutelage of the revered Padmabhushana Dr. K. Venkatalakshamma, considered the last representative of a prominent temple dancing dynasty in Karnataka. Beyond dance, he also delved into Yoga, initially learning from his father and subsequently from the renowned Yogiraj Deshikacharya in Mysore. His comprehensive artistic education included several other classical dance styles, folk dance, Carnatic vocals, and the string instrument Veena. In 1976, D. Keshava moved to Basel, Switzerland, where he co-founded Kalasri, the first institution for Indian dance and Yoga in the country, with his Swiss partner Esther Jenny. Together, as the "Swiss-Indian dancing couple Esther and Keshava," they pioneered the promotion of Indian art and culture in Europe, performing extensively across Switzerland, India, Germany, Austria, England, USA, Italy, France, and Kuwait. As the director of the Kalasri Dance Ensemble, Keshava has been instrumental in creating a vast repertoire of traditional and innovative choreographies, which have garnered significant success with both Swiss and Indian audiences. His relentless efforts as a cultural mediator between India and Switzerland have earned him widespread respect and several accolades. Kalasri, under his and Esther Jenny's guidance, has become a vibrant center for cultural exchange, shaping generations of students and enthusiasts. In 2003, he further extended his legacy by founding the Kalasri Cultural Center in Mysore, India. Keshava's contributions have been recognized with prestigious honors, including the Global Man Award in 2007 for his life's work and cultural impact, and the Karnataka Kalashri Award in 2021/22, the highest civilian award from the government of Karnataka. His daughters, Anjali Keshava and Sumitra Keshava, both accomplished Bharatanatyam dancers, continue to uphold and expand the family's artistic heritage, performing and teaching globally.
