🪔 About

Debabrata Banerjee is an Indian classical dance figure based in Kolkata, India, known for his contributions to Kathak, Bharatanatyam, and the Uday Shankar style of creative and contemporary dance. He received his training under the legendary Amala Shankar. Banerjee is the founder and head of the Debabrata Banerjee Institute, a dance institution in Talpukur, Kolkata, which is registered with Pracheen Kala Kendra, Chandigarh, for examinations in various dance subjects. He also leads the Indian Creative Dance Troupe, an organization that has been celebrating "42 years of excellence" as of July 2026, indicating a career spanning since approximately 1984. Through his troupe, Banerjee has choreographed and presented numerous productions, including "Nrityaanjali" and "Amar Bharat," a ballet based on the life and ideals of Swami Vivekananda, performed in the Uday Shankar style. His choreography reflects the dance philosophy of Uday Shankar, with a focus on attention to detail and dancer involvement. The Indian Creative Dance Troupe has performed at various festivals and events, including the Bolagarh Mahotsav in Orissa and the Industrial India Trade Fair in Kolkata. In January 2008, a Canadian television company planned to create a documentary about Debabrata Banerjee and his Indian Creative Dance Troupe, highlighting his work in Hindustani classical dance and music.
