Deepa Hegde is a dedicated Bharatanatyam performer, choreographer, and teacher, originally from Sirsi, Karnataka, India, where she was raised in a family that fostered Indian classical art forms like Yakshagana, Hindustani vocal, instrumental music, and Bharatanatyam. Her journey in Bharatanatyam commenced at the tender age of six under the guidance of Guru Dr. Sahana Bhat, culminating in her Arangetrum, a solo debut performance, in 2005. Following her foundational training, she relocated to Bangalore to pursue advanced studies under the tutelage of the esteemed Bharatanatyam dancer and Guru Dr. Sathyanarayana Raju. Deepa Hegde has achieved a Vidwat grade in Bharatanatyam from Karnataka Secondary Education and further solidified her academic credentials with a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Bharatanatyam from Tamil University, Tanjore. Her artistic development has been enriched through participation in workshops led by legendary figures such as Padmashri Vyjayanthimala Bali, Guru Smt. Bragha Bessel, and Padmashri Narthaki Nataraj. Additionally, she has received mentorship from Dr. Rajyashree Ramesh in Berlin and Mavin Khoo in London, broadening her artistic perspective. With a career spanning over two decades in practice and more than 15 years of performance experience, Deepa Hegde has graced numerous national and international stages with both solo and group productions, showcasing her evolving artistry as a soloist and choreographer. She is recognized as an acclaimed graded artist of Doordarshan. Currently, Deepa Hegde is based in Munich, Germany, where she is a vibrant presence in the dance community, actively performing, choreographing, and engaging in multidisciplinary collaborations. In Munich, she established "Margam, the school of dance," an initiative dedicated to providing a nurturing environment for individuals of all ages to learn and explore the intricacies of Bharatanatyam. Margam employs an effective teaching methodology that incorporates an understanding of human anatomy, physiology, and movement techniques to promote injury-free dancing. Under her direction, students of Margam presented their inaugural dance recital in Munich on June 25, 2022, which was well-received.
