Dr. Devika Borthakur is an eminent exponent of Sattriya, an Indian classical dance form from Assam. She is also proficient in Bharatanatyam, having completed Nritya Visharad in both styles. Dr. Borthakur holds a PhD in performing arts from Dibrugarh University, Assam, where she conducted a comparative study of Bharatanatyam and Sattriya. She also completed her Masters in Dance from Lalit Kala Kendra, Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune. Her training in Sattriya and Bharatanatyam began in childhood, under the guidance of renowned Guru Gopal Krishna Goswami. She is also a disciple of Ministry of Culture Ustad Bishmillah Khan Awardee Guru Naren Chandra Baruah, Sahitya Akademi Awardee Guru Late Dr. Keshavananda Dev Goswami, and SNA Awardee Guru Dr. Sucheta Chapekar. Dr. Borthakur has performed Sattriya at various prestigious platforms, including those organized by the Sangeet Natak Akademi and ICCR. She has also presented Sattriya choreographies, such as one on 'Geet Ramayan' for ICCR, New Delhi, and another in the Kala Prawah Mandir Mahotsav series by Sangeet Natak Akademi in Ambajogai. Recognized for her contributions, Dr. Borthakur received a Fellowship as an Outstanding Artist of Sattriya from the Ministry of Culture, Delhi, in July 2017 (Jr. Fellowship). She was also honored with the Guru Gaurav Purashkar by Nruta Bharat Institute, Pune. Dr. Devika Borthakur is actively involved in promoting and propagating Sattriya dance. She is the Head of the Dance Department and an Assistant Professor at Bharati Vidyapeeth. She founded the "Adi School of Dance" in Pune, an initiative dedicated to teaching and promoting Sattriya. She has also authored a book on Sattriya dance, published by Bharati Vidyapeeth University. In 2025, she curated the Adi Kala Sattra Festival in Pune, showcasing various Indian classical dance forms, with a highlight on Sattriya performed by her and her students. She also guides PhD students in Dance at BVDU School of Performing Arts. Awards & Honours: Fellowship as Outstanding Artist of Sattriya (2017), Guru Gaurav Purashkar.
