Devraj Patnaik is a distinguished Odissi dancer, teacher, performer, choreographer, music composer, musician, and percussionist, widely recognized for his significant contributions to Indian classical dance in North America and India. Born on October 28, 1975, in Oakville, Ontario, Canada, he is the son of renowned Odissi exponent Chitralekha Patnaik and brother of dancer Ellora Patnaik. His family emigrated to Canada in the 1960s. Patnaik received his initial Odissi dance training from his mother and sister from a very young age. He further honed his skills under legendary gurus such as Padmabibhusan Kelucharan Mohapatra, Guru Sri Gangadhar Pradhan, and Padmashri Pankaj Charan Das. In music, he studied tabla from Badya Samrat Sri Umesh Chandra Kar and pakhawaj from Guru Sri Banamali Maharana and Guru Sri Gangadhar Pradhan. He also received Raga instruction from Sitarist Sri Jyotindra Prasad Mishra and K. Rama Rao Patra, with much of his Indian Classical music knowledge being self-learned. His professional career began with performing in 1988 and teaching Odissi dance in 1986. In 1993, he became the Managing Director of the Chitralekha Dance Academy. In 1994, he co-founded Chitralekha Odissi Dance Creations (now Chitralekha Odissi Dance Creations Incorporated or CODC Inc.) with his mother and sister, serving as its Artistic Director. Under CODC Inc., he has choreographed and composed music extensively since the late 1990s, staging major Odissi works and original productions. His notable choreographic works include the Mahabharata series (2003-2006), Panchadeva (2001), and Jai Sri Rama (2006). In 2010, he was chosen to succeed the late Padmashri Gangadhar Pradhan as Artistic Director of the Guru Gangadhar Pradhan Foundation and the Konark Natya Mandap.
