Douglas M. Knight Jr. is an American scholar, author, and Carnatic percussionist, primarily known for his profound contributions to the understanding and preservation of Bharatanatyam, particularly through his association with the legendary dancer T. Balasaraswati's family. He married Balasaraswati's daughter, Lakshmi Knight, an exquisite dancer in her own right, and is the father of contemporary Bharatanatyam exponent Aniruddha Knight. Knight's formal training in Indian classical music involved studying the South Indian mridangam (drum) at Wesleyan University, where Balasaraswati and her brothers had taught since 1962. He received direct tutelage from T. Ranganathan, Balasaraswati's eminent percussionist brother, thereby immersing himself in the musical traditions integral to Bharatanatyam. His most significant scholarly work is the acclaimed biography, "Balasaraswati: Her Art and Life," published in 2010. This comprehensive book, which earned him a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2003, delves into Balasaraswati's artistic journey, her unique hereditary style, and the broader socio-cultural landscape of Carnatic music and Bharatanatyam over two centuries. Drawing extensively from family archives and a network of relatives and friends, the biography offers rich details and avoids hagiography, presenting a nuanced portrayal of the artist and her struggles. As a performing musician, Douglas Knight has served as a mridangam accompanist for Bharatanatyam performances.
