Dr. Mala Shashikanth is a distinguished figure in Indian classical dance, renowned as a performing artist and teacher with over 35 years of experience. She is the prime disciple of Guru Natyacharya V.S. Koushik from Karnataka. Dr. Shashikanth holds a Master of Arts degree and earned her Doctorate on Karnataka Parampara from the prestigious Bangalore University. Her expertise spans Bharatanatyam and Kathakali, with her Kathakali dance recitals receiving universal appreciation. In 1989, Dr. Mala Shashikanth founded Kaishiki Natyavahini, an institution dedicated to promoting the arts of Dance, Music, Yoga, and Sanskrit Shloka recitation. The academy focuses on preserving and propagating the Nanjangudu Parampare and Kolar Parampare dance forms, which are sub-styles of Karnataka's dance traditions. Kaishiki Natyavahini provides training in Bharatanatyam, alongside music, Sanskrit shlokas, and yoga, emphasizing the link between Yogashastra asanas and Bharatanatyam karanas. She also serves as the Principal Secretary of Karnataka Bharatagama Prathishtana, an academy of performing arts established in 2010, which aims to reconstruct and reinvent Karnataka's classical dance heritage. Dr. Shashikanth is the author of "Paramparadhara," a book detailing the evolution and growth of dance art in Karnataka.
