Dr. Meenakshi Iyer Gangopadhyay is a distinguished figure in Indian classical dance, serving as a Professor and Head of the Department (Dance) at Nalanda Nritya Kala Mahavidyalaya in Mumbai, India. She has been associated with Nalanda since 1995, bringing over 28 years of experience to the institution. Her academic credentials include a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Dance) in 1993, a Master of Fine Arts (Dance) in 1995, and a Ph.D. in Dance in 2002, all from the University of Mumbai. Additionally, she holds a Bachelor of Commerce (1988), a Master of Commerce (1991), a Master of Arts (Indology) (2020), and a Diploma in Sanskrit (1997) from the same university. As a Bharatanatyam practitioner, Dr. Iyer Gangopadhyay is a versatile artist, academician, research scholar, and choreographer. She has conducted classical dance programs as a Nattuvanar and choreographed numerous solo Bharatanatyam items and dance-dramas. Her performances have graced national platforms such as Krishna Gana Sabha (Chennai), Kamani Auditorium (New Delhi), National Centre for the Performing Arts (Mumbai), and the Khajuraho Festival. Beyond her performance and teaching roles, Dr. Iyer Gangopadhyay has contributed significantly to dance scholarship. She was part of the team of Analyzers for the Ministry of Culture's "Synergy Between Education and Culture" project (2010-2011) and has served as a dance critic, contributing reviews to 'Sruti,' India's premier magazine for Performing Arts. She has also guided 14 research students and published several research papers and book chapters on Indian classical dance. Her teaching legacy includes training numerous students for Arangetrams and national festival performances. She is recognized for her profound knowledge and dedication to promoting Bharatanatyam.
