🪔 About

Dr. Uma Anand, a distinguished figure in Indian classical dance, is the daughter and torchbearer of the legendary Bharatanatyam guru, K. N. Dhandayudhapani Pillai. Her journey into Bharatanatyam began at the tender age of five, receiving her initial and foundational training directly from her illustrious father, who was renowned for developing his own unique style after being influenced by great gurus like Meenakshisundaram Pillai. At just 20 years old, following her father's demise, Dr. Uma Anand bravely stepped into his shoes, dedicating herself to perpetuating his rich legacy and distinctive style of Bharatanatyam, a commitment she upholds to this day. Her academic pursuits complemented her practical expertise. In 1998, she joined Annamalai University, where she not only imparted her knowledge as a teacher but also pursued and successfully completed her PhD in dance. Her doctoral research was guided initially by vidwan O.S. Thyagarajan and later by thavil vidwan, Haridwaramangalam Palanivel. Dr. Anand retired from her teaching position at the University in 2013. A testament to her dedication to preserving her father's contributions, Dr. Uma Anand authored the significant book "Natyakala Chakravarthy K. N. Dhandayudapani: Life and Contributions" in 2011. This comprehensive publication serves as a vital resource, featuring a detailed biography of her father, rare photographs, and English transliterations of his numerous compositions, including varnams, which are highly popular among dancers. She even added compositions not found in earlier versions of his work. Dr. Uma Anand's influence extends internationally, as she regularly conducts workshops in various countries. Notably, she visits Toronto, Canada, annually for six weeks to teach at a study centre jointly run by Annamalai University, and also conducts workshops in the United States. While she performed extensively in her younger years, Dr. Uma Anand made the conscious decision to cease public performances in her thirties, choosing instead to channel her energies entirely into teaching. She firmly believes that without sufficient practice, a dancer should not grace the stage. Her cheerful and friendly demeanor has made her a highly sought-after guru, continually attracting and inspiring a multitude of students. Awards & Honours: NRITYA PERUNJOTHI (2022).
