Durga Charan Ranbir, born on March 1, 1951, in Kamaguru village, Odisha, India, is a revered Odissi guru, choreographer, and a leading exponent of the Deba Prasad Das gharana of Odissi. His early life was immersed in Odisha's rich performance traditions, including folk and ritual forms, which profoundly influenced his aesthetic. Despite initial family disapproval, his passion for dance led him to formal training. He received rigorous tutelage under the legendary Odissi master Deba Prasad Das and also trained under Guru Pankaj Charan Das at Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya, Bhubaneswar, where he earned the "Nrutyacharya" degree. Ranbir not only absorbed the technique but also the distinctive philosophy of the Deba Prasad Das gharana, characterized by a powerful chauka, emphatic rhythmic architecture, sabda-swara-pata, and a strong dramatic sense infused with ritual-tribal and folk idioms. After his guru's passing in 1986, Ranbir became a key inheritor of the style, diligently reconstructing, preserving, and teaching seminal compositions while also extending the repertoire with his own choreographies. He served for decades on the faculty of Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya, mentoring generations of students. In 1993, he founded his own Odissi training institution, Nrutyayan, in Bhubaneswar, dedicated to propagating the Deba Prasad style. Nrutyayan, established in 1987, initially started with three students and has since grown into a prominent institution with a global reach, with centers in the United States, Canada, and Malaysia. Guru Ranbir's stage career includes numerous performances at major Indian and international dance festivals. He has been instrumental in codifying training progressions and restoring sabda-swara-pata passages, safeguarding a valuable aesthetic lineage. His contributions to Odissi have been recognized with numerous accolades, including the Padma Shri (2025) and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (2005). He continues to be a significant figure in the world of Indian classical dance, known for his uncompromising training and dedication to the dramatic truth of abhinaya.
