Durga Tilak is an accomplished Bharatanatyam dancer, a mechanical engineer, and a doctoral researcher, embodying a unique blend of artistic and academic pursuits. Her journey into Indian classical dance commenced at the tender age of four in Pune, India. She initially explored Kuchipudi for approximately eighteen months before dedicating herself to Bharatanatyam under the guidance of Dr. Parimal Phadke. Dr. Phadke has served as a profound mentor for nearly two decades, not only honing her technical skills but also nurturing her intellectual curiosity and instilling a foundational set of values concerning dance and aesthetics that continue to shape her artistic approach. Her rigorous training culminated in her achieving a Nritya Alankar, a master's degree in Bharatanatyam, from the esteemed Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Mandal (ABGMVM), Miraj, in 2017. Prior to this, she marked her formal debut with her arangetram in 2010. Throughout her career, Tilak has graced various stages, presenting both traditional classical repertoire and innovative choreographic works. Notably, she performed a personal piece for the Emerge platform at Leicester for Nupur Arts, where she was mentored by Kamala Devam. A significant performance highlight includes her Bharatanatyam recital at the Bhavitavya Festival in Pune on September 15, 2019, an event collaboratively organized by SaVaNi events and NCPA Mumbai. Observers have praised her performances for their technical precision, expressive abhinaya, and insightful interpretations, noting a distinct spark and brightness in her dance. Beyond her active role as a performer, Durga Tilak is also a recognized voice in dance discourse. She contributes as a dance writer for Pulseconnects, an online platform, and curates her own Substack publication titled "The Bharatanatyamist," where she shares her perspectives on classical dance. Academically, she holds a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, earned in 2018, and is currently engaged in doctoral research at the School of Chemical, Materials, and Biological Engineering at the University of Sheffield, demonstrating her commitment to diverse fields of knowledge.
