🪔 About

Durgesh Gangani is a distinguished Indian classical Kathak dancer, recognized as a torchbearer of the Jaipur Gharana. He hails from an illustrious family deeply rooted in Kathak, being the grandson of the legendary Guru Pt. Sundarlal Gangani and the son of Dr. Pt. Jagdish Gangani, a renowned exponent of the Jaipur Gharana. Durgesh began his rigorous training under the tutelage of his father at the tender age of four, meticulously imbibing the intricate rhythmic and dramatic aspects of Kathak. He is celebrated for his exceptional command over complex nritta (pure dance) and nritya (expressive dance) elements, showcasing intricate footwork, swift pirouettes, and powerful abhinaya (mime) with remarkable vigor and speed. His performances often feature intricate taals, including Rudra taal (11 beats) and Basant taal (9 beats), demonstrating his profound understanding of rhythm and movement. Gangani further honed his artistry, earning a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Kathak from the Faculty of Performing Arts, The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, Vadodara, in May 2017, where he graduated summa cum laude as a Gold Medalist. He is currently pursuing his PhD and serves as a teaching assistant at the Department of Dance, Faculty of Performing Arts, MSU, contributing to the academic and practical training of the next generation of dancers. Throughout his career, Durgesh Gangani has performed extensively at prestigious music and dance festivals both in India and internationally, captivating audiences with his dynamic and expressive performances. He is dedicated to preserving the rich traditions of Kathak while also making the art form relevant to contemporary audiences. Based in Akota, Vadodara, India, he has expressed a deep connection to the city, stating, "Whatever I am today is because of Vadodara" and affirming his commitment to the city where his grandfather introduced Kathak. His contributions to Kathak have been recognized with significant national and state-level awards, solidifying his position as a prominent figure in Indian classical dance.
