Evita Issa is a Bharatanatyam dancer originating from Suriname. In 2007, at the age of 19, she was recognized as an "upcoming talent" in the Surinamese publication Parbode, which highlighted her dedication and aspirations in the world of dance. Her formal training in Bharatanatyam, a revered classical Indian dance style, commenced when she was 13 years old, marking the beginning of her serious engagement with the art form. Prior to this, her passion for dance manifested in performances for family and friends. Issa's artistic repertoire was not limited to Bharatanatyam; she also delved into other dance genres, including ballet, which she studied under the tutelage of Marlene Lie A Ling. Furthermore, she demonstrated considerable skill in Arabic belly dance, showcasing her versatility across different cultural dance forms. Following the completion of her secondary education, Evita Issa pursued advanced studies in the performing arts in the United States. She enrolled at Miami Dade College, where she pursued a Major in Dance and Drama on Stage. During a visit to Suriname in 2007, after finishing her inaugural year at the college, she actively participated in local dance productions. These included the Family's Christmas Show presented by Marlene's Ballet and the "Ticket To India" event, which was directed by Madhoeri Jagmohan. These engagements provided her with valuable professional experience and insights into the local dance landscape. Issa articulated a profound commitment to dance, viewing it not merely as a hobby but as her life's purpose. She underscored the critical importance of discipline and an unwavering desire for continuous progress in a dancer's journey. Reflecting on the dance environment in Suriname, she observed that while the country was rich in young talent, there was a noticeable lack of public attention and financial support for emerging artists. She also pointed out areas where the Surinamese dance scene could improve, particularly concerning technical aspects such as lighting and the organization of general rehearsals. Despite these challenges, Evita Issa expressed a clear ambition to elevate Suriname's cultural profile through her dance, both nationally and potentially on an international stage.
