Dr. Mudapaka Venkateswara Rao, widely recognized as Ardhanareeswaram Venkat, was an internationally renowned Kuchipudi exponent, guru, teacher, choreographer, and researcher based in Hyderabad, India. Hailing from Elluru in Andhra Pradesh, he passed away on August 8, 2022, at the age of 58, following a prolonged illness. He is survived by his dancer wife Prasanti, and their children, Rithwik and Charmila, both accomplished dancers who are continuing his artistic legacy. Venkat was a prominent disciple of the veteran traditional mentor Korada Narasimha Rao, who also originated from Elluru. He further trained in the Vempati Chinna Satyam style through Chinta Adi Narayan Sarma and received guidance from Padmasree Nataraja Ramakrishna. Academically, he held an MPhil in aesthetics and a PhD in dance from Delhi University, where his doctoral research focused on a comparative study of Kuchipudi and Pagaativeshas, with a specialization in Ardhanareeswaram. He also served as a research fellow for both the HRD Department, Government of India, and the Andhra Pradesh Government. In 1988, he founded Nritya Darpana, his dance academy in Hyderabad, where he dedicated himself to training numerous dance aspirants. He was particularly celebrated for his profound rendition of the Ardhanareeswara concept, an item he meticulously revived from near extinction. He performed this masterpiece over 4000 times, earning him eight world records and the popular epithet "Ardhanareeswaram Venkat." His significant contributions to Kuchipudi included the revival of rare items like 'Chodigani Kalapam' and the choreography of approximately 40 dance dramas. He also innovated the "Nritya-Chitra Jugalbandi," a unique performance blending Kuchipudi and Kathak dance with live painting. Throughout his illustrious career, Venkat performed extensively at various festivals across India and internationally, including in Hong Kong, Thailand, Dubai, Sharjah, Malaysia, Singapore, and Sri Lanka. His numerous accolades include the Siddhendra Yogi Award from the Andhra Pradesh State Government, the Simhatalatam (a lion-headed golden bracelet symbolizing high honor), Kanakabhishekam (a gold coin shower), the Best Classical Dancer award from the Rasamayi organization in Dubai, the Award of Honour from the International Minzar Mahotsav, and the Garuda Puraskar by TTD, Tirumala. His academy, Nritya Darpana, also received the Siddendra Yogi Award for Nritya Roopakaalu and the Best Institute award from the Department of Youth Affairs, Government of Andhra Pradesh, and NYKS.
