Ganga Thampi is a distinguished Indian classical dancer and educator, primarily recognized for her contributions to Bharatanatyam. Born into an environment rich with classical dance and music, she began her artistic journey at the tender age of 10, learning Kathakali from her father, the esteemed Kathakali Maestro Shri Madavoor Vasudevan Nair, a recipient of the Kendra Sangeetha Natak Academy Award in 1977. After completing her pre-university course in Kerala, Thampi pursued formal training in Bharatanatyam at the prestigious Kalakshetra Foundation in Chennai, where she earned both a Diploma and a Post Diploma. During her six years at Kalakshetra, she also completed her BA and MA in English Literature through a correspondence course from Madras University. She further honed her Bharatanatyam skills under the tutelage of renowned gurus Sharada Hoffman for four years and Kalaimamani Krishnaveni Lakshmanan for two years. Thampi's performing career is marked by her instrumental roles in numerous Kalakshetra Dance Dramas, including portraying Sita in "Ramayanam," Saraswathi Bhai in "Purandara Dasa," Parvathi in "Siva Geethi Mala," Madanavalli in "Krishnamari Kuravanchi," Radha in "Geetha Govindam," Padmavathi in "Jayadeva," Parvathi in "Kumara Sambhavam," and Kundhi in "Karna Sapatham." She has toured extensively with the Kalakshetra troupe across India and the West, and represented Indian Art and Culture by performing in South Africa's Bharathotsav in 1996. In 1996, she joined the Kalakshetra Foundation as a lecturer in Bharatanatyam, continuing to contribute as a guest artist after her post-graduation. Her expertise is also recognized through her role as a judge at the Kerala State Youth Festival in 1998, and her nomination as a Member of the Board of Studies in Dance at the Sree Sankara University of Sanskrit. Thampi has also showcased her choreographic talent with the dance poem "Chintavishtayaya Sita," based on a work by Malayalam poet Shri Kumaran Asan.
