Gangadhar Pradhan (10 July 1948 – 10 October 2010) was a highly renowned Indian Odissi dancer, choreographer, and guru, considered a foremost exponent and a leader of the second generation of Odissi. Born in Parikula, Puri district, Odisha, he began his dance journey at the age of six as a Gotipua dancer at the Balunkeshwar temple in Dimirisena, a tradition where young boys perform dressed as women. He later received formal training at Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya in Bhubaneswar, studying Odissi under the guidance of eminent gurus such as Pankaj Charan Das, Dr. Minati Mishra, Deba Prasad Das, and Dhirendranath Patnaik. He also received advanced training from Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra and intensive mardala (percussion) training under Singhari Shyam Sundar Kar and Guru Banamali Maharana. Pradhan was an accomplished percussionist, notably accompanying the legendary dancer Sanjukta Panigrahi as her co-dancer and percussionist. His career was marked by significant contributions to the promotion and preservation of Odissi. He founded the Orissa Dance Academy in Bhubaneswar in 1975, which became a pivotal institution for training in Odissi and other regional dance forms, and established several affiliated branches in India, the USA, Canada, and the Netherlands. In 1986, he founded the Konark Natya Mandap in Konark, which also serves as a temple of learning following the Guru-Shishya tradition. He was the visionary behind major cultural festivals, including the Konark Dance Festival (established in 1986) and the Dhauli Dance Festival (established in 2001), along with other events like the Kalinga Kala Utsav and Odissi Sandhya. Guru Pradhan also served as the President of the Orissa State Sangeet Natak Akademi from 2006-2007. In his later years, he initiated a project to document the folk dance styles of Odisha. He passed away on October 10, 2010, at the age of 62, after a cerebral hemorrhage.
