Ghazal Ramzani is a Berlin-based Iranian dancer, choreographer, dance filmmaker, and facilitator, deeply rooted in North Indian classical Kathak dance. Her artistic journey began with an immersion in Kathak in 2013, driven by its resonance with her Iranian cultural heritage and its interdisciplinary nature, merging rhythm, movement, narration, and mythology. Ramzani's background includes classical music, having been a violinist at the Youth Sinfonie Orchestra Bremen, and former studies in philosophy, holding a BA from the University of Hildesheim. She received her formal Kathak training at the National School of Kathak in New Delhi, where she was a scholarship awardee. During her time as a student in New Delhi, she trained under renowned choreographers like Pt. Rajendra Kumar Gangani, focusing on the Lucknow Gharana style. She later pursued professional training and completed her MFA in Contemporary Performative Arts at the University of Gothenburg. Her choreographic practice explores undocumented and marginalized narratives, particularly from Iran, addressing themes of injustice, trauma, and resistance, and intertwining mythological, historical, political, and intimate layers. She is the founder and teacher of the Kathak Dance School Berlin, an inclusive space that offers weekly classes in traditional Jaipur-style Kathak techniques and choreography, fostering experimentation and critical engagement with the dance form.
